Get Organized Month Tip: Organizing Mail

January 11th, 2011

organizing mailLast week we shared that January is the official host Get Organized Month according to the National Association of Professional Organizers. In honor of the month we will be celebrating with specific organization tips each week. This week’s Get Organized Month Tip will outline effective ways to organize mail found on Real Simple.

  • Set up a workplace. Designate a place in your home as your mail workspace. Include a table or desk, container to store the week’s mail, a trash can for junk mail, and a paper shredder to destroy documents with sensitive information. Devise a scheduled time to sort through mail each day.
  • Create a filing System. Create a separate, portable file designated for bill pay. File bills (minus their envelopes unless you mail them in) by their due date. Also include a check book, online passwords, pens, envelops and stamps so you will have everything you need at any given time.
  • Store important documents. Use a file cabinet to store bank statements, insurance claims, tax records and other important documents. Section them off in broadly labeled file folders that include more specific sub-categories.
  • Organize magazines and catalogs. Separate magazine and catalogs from the rest of your mail as soon as you bring them in and place them in a magazine rack or on your coffee table for viewing pleasure.

Organizing Your Closet with a Valet Rod

October 28th, 2010

Closet Factory valet rodWhen your wife wakes up in the morning to get dressed, does your bedroom and closet look like a yard sale?  I mean all the clothes your wife owns are hung from every vacant door jamb or knob she can find.  This yard sale goes on daily, or nightly depending on when she pulls her clothes out for the next day.  The one in my bedroom sometimes lasts over night.  She picks her top ten outfit choices then wakes up the next morning to grab something completely different. Different blouse, different skirt suit, and of course different shoes and accessories. I finally decided that I had to lend a hand.  No I didn’t pick an outfit out for her, I am not crazy.  I added a Valet rod to our closet.  Now she has the perfect place to put her clothes while in decision mode.  Better yet, I can walk through the doors without knocking clothes everywhere. Call Closet Factory Richmond today at 804-559-0001 to discuss how we can help you customize and organize your closet!

Manage Your Time, Organize Your Home

October 12th, 2010

Do you have a problem with time management as well as home organization? If so, this is probably because being organized directly relates to time management. If managing time is a constant struggle for you then you probably have a hard time blocking off time to clean up. If traditional methods such as making lists or attempting to time yourself have proven to be unsuccessful then you should consider merging the two.

The innovative designers at Wonjune Son have integrated a clock and diary together creating the Watch Diary. The Watch Diary is the perfect way to keep organized throughout the day. The diary is filled with ordinary blank pages, however there is a display in the middle of each page that displays the current time. With the Watch Diary you can efficiently plan out and organize your day because you have no choice but to mindful of the time. Although simple, the design of the Watch Diary could be very helpful with time management and in turn becoming organized. What do you think?

Seasonal Closet Organization

September 29th, 2010

girl cleaning closetImagine you have to be to work in 20 minutes, your commute will take up 15 of those, and with the addition of cooler mornings you want to grab a sweater but you just can’t get to it in 5 minutes. Although you’ve re-organized and cleaned up your closet every piece of summer clothing you own is in the front and your cold weather clothes are in the back. Now that fall is officially upon us you may not need to have you summer wardrobe at the forefront of your closet.

If you happen to have a lot of clothes you may need to consider rotating the items in your closet on a seasonal basis. Removing your summer clothes from your closet and storing them in else where will clear room for your long sleeve shirts, sweaters and jackets. Rotating your closet on a seasonal system will make organizing and finding items easier with only one season’s clothes to worry about. Remember as you are packing up clothes for the off season to store them in an organized manner so you can put them back in the closet with ease.
