5 Closet Accessories for Men

March 1st, 2011

We seem to be on a roll discussing closet accessories, first we posted on organizing accessories with jewelry storage, then we shared a reminder about our special to receive 2 free closet accessories. And now we are going to share a post detailing the 5 accessories to keep men organized when it comes down to the closet from the national Closet Factory blog.

  1. built in closetBuilt-in laundry hamper with a removable basket, or a removable canvas bag. This is a necessity for keeping dirty clothing off the floor and out of the way. Some men like 2 hampers so that dry-cleaning and business wear stay in one and casual everyday stuff in the other.
  2. Pullout pants rack. Often men fold jeans in half in their custom closet system and lay them on a big, long shelf or put them in drawers, or some hang their slacks on a pant hanger and others fold them over a hanger. The best solution is to have them all in one place, neatly hanging, in a spot that’s it own space.
  3. Velvet, faux leather or suede lining closet accessories in a drawer. Men need a special place to drop their wallet, watch, billfold, iPod, keys and valuable loose ends when they arrive home.  Add a bit of luxury with the padded velvet option for the drawer bottom.
  4. Cubbies for t-shirts and sweaters work like a charm to keep folded clothing neat and tidy. Wide shelves are impossible to keep orderly while a cubby built-in closet compartments allow a pile of 4 to 6 items to stay nicely folded when you remove one from the stack. If you already have a built-in closet system you can add clip-on-shelf dividers to create a cubby effect!
  5. Slatwall with an assortment of organizer racks and different size hooks. Slatwalls are perfect for utilizing wall space that would often go unused. They are the best option for a organization solution for odd shaped items like baseball caps, sunglasses and all sorts of miscellaneous items.

How To Clean Up Quickly

November 25th, 2010

Murphy Bed LifestylesWhat do you do when your aunt calls to tell you she will be arriving two hours ahead of schedule? You look around and take inventory of all the rooms you still have to clean and panic for a full five minutes. After the shock sets in that you don’t have half the time to tidy up as you thought relax. To help you in your time crunch we’ve found a few tips on Apartment Therapy to help you clean up quickly.

  1. First impressions: Walk outside then walk back in. What do you see? A messy entryway? Couch cushions all asunder? Focus on what your guests will see first and pick up those areas which will set the tone for a clean house.
  2. Where will they be spending their time? Focus on that room next. Don’t worry about putting everything in the exact right spot (which goes against good organizational advice)—if you have a drawer you use for shoving things out of the way, then use it now and go back and organize it later.
  3. Check the bathroom: The other room your guests will probably want to use is the restroom, so wipe down the sink and toilet quickly with disinfectant wipes, close the shower curtain, wipe down the mirror and make sure the towels are folded and there’s hand soap nearby.
  4. Make it smell good: Spray a natural cleaner in the corners of your home to make your entire house smell good.
  5. Relax: You don’t want to be out of breath as soon as your guests arrive.  Do the above steps, sweep the floor if you have the time, and then put some music on and wait for guests to arrive.

Organizing the Coat Closet

November 10th, 2010

coat closetWith the temperature steadily dropping it seems as if you need a heavier jacket each week, but who wants to open the coat closet? It’s a complete and utter mess. It’s over stuffed and half of the items in there don’t even belong. Unless you would rather be cold, we are going to provide some tips on organizing your coat closet so you can find the right jacket or sweater for the weather.

1. Use all the space. There’s a little of everything is in the coat closet, but none of it is organized or fits correctly. Here at Closet Factory Richmond we can customize your coat closet to use all the space in an organized and efficient manner.

2. Double up on rods. If you have good amount of short or kids coats consider installing double rods. having an additional rod will allow you to easily store coats and keep them neatly organized by length.

3. Discover hidden storage. Having a customized closet solution will reveal all the hidden storage space you didn’t know you had. The extra space will allow you to store additional items in your coat closet, such as boots, umbrellas and other weather accessories.

4. As always, purge. Eliminate coat closet clutter by deciding which coats and sweaters you actually wear. Open up additional space by donating the items you don’t wear. Do this every year and to keep your coat closet under control.

5. Go outside the closet. If you don’t have a large coat closet go outside the closet for storage. Placing a coat tree or hooks in your entryway will allow you to store outerwear you wear on a daily basis, keeping specialty items organized in the closet.

6. Use additional organizers. Including an over-the-door organizer will allow you to store small accessories such as gloves, keys, sunglasses, hats and earmuffs right along with your outerwear.

7. Rotate seasonal items. Just as we detailed in our post, Seasonal Closet Organization you may want to consider rotating your outerwear by seasons. When it warms up move winter coats to other storage places and replace with lighter jackets to keep both sets organized.

Seasonal Closet Organization

September 29th, 2010

girl cleaning closetImagine you have to be to work in 20 minutes, your commute will take up 15 of those, and with the addition of cooler mornings you want to grab a sweater but you just can’t get to it in 5 minutes. Although you’ve re-organized and cleaned up your closet every piece of summer clothing you own is in the front and your cold weather clothes are in the back. Now that fall is officially upon us you may not need to have you summer wardrobe at the forefront of your closet.

If you happen to have a lot of clothes you may need to consider rotating the items in your closet on a seasonal basis. Removing your summer clothes from your closet and storing them in else where will clear room for your long sleeve shirts, sweaters and jackets. Rotating your closet on a seasonal system will make organizing and finding items easier with only one season’s clothes to worry about. Remember as you are packing up clothes for the off season to store them in an organized manner so you can put them back in the closet with ease.
