Richmond the time has come once again for the SunTrust Richmond Marathon, “America’s Friendliest Marathon.” The marathon will start in finish in downtown Richmond taking runners through our scenic city. There will also be two wet-washcloth stations so runners look their best as they get their photo taken crossing the finish line. Runners don’t get to have all the fun at this marathon. There will be three party zones with free food, prizes and noisemakers for spectators. Head out this weekend and be apart of “America’s Friendliest Marathon!”

Organizing the Coat Closet

November 10th, 2010

coat closetWith the temperature steadily dropping it seems as if you need a heavier jacket each week, but who wants to open the coat closet? It’s a complete and utter mess. It’s over stuffed and half of the items in there don’t even belong. Unless you would rather be cold, we are going to provide some tips on organizing your coat closet so you can find the right jacket or sweater for the weather.

1. Use all the space. There’s a little of everything is in the coat closet, but none of it is organized or fits correctly. Here at Closet Factory Richmond we can customize your coat closet to use all the space in an organized and efficient manner.

2. Double up on rods. If you have good amount of short or kids coats consider installing double rods. having an additional rod will allow you to easily store coats and keep them neatly organized by length.

3. Discover hidden storage. Having a customized closet solution will reveal all the hidden storage space you didn’t know you had. The extra space will allow you to store additional items in your coat closet, such as boots, umbrellas and other weather accessories.

4. As always, purge. Eliminate coat closet clutter by deciding which coats and sweaters you actually wear. Open up additional space by donating the items you don’t wear. Do this every year and to keep your coat closet under control.

5. Go outside the closet. If you don’t have a large coat closet go outside the closet for storage. Placing a coat tree or hooks in your entryway will allow you to store outerwear you wear on a daily basis, keeping specialty items organized in the closet.

6. Use additional organizers. Including an over-the-door organizer will allow you to store small accessories such as gloves, keys, sunglasses, hats and earmuffs right along with your outerwear.

7. Rotate seasonal items. Just as we detailed in our post, Seasonal Closet Organization you may want to consider rotating your outerwear by seasons. When it warms up move winter coats to other storage places and replace with lighter jackets to keep both sets organized.

More Shoes than Closet Space?

November 2nd, 2010

closet factory Richmond closetDo you live with someone that hasn’t found a pair of shoes they don’t like, worse yet that they don’t own?  Well welcome to my world.  Not long ago I realized that miraculously shoes multiply in the dark, they must because there’s no other way to explain it.  In the morning when I go get my shoes for the day I notice that they are intermingled with my wife’s shoes.  Slowly but surely I noticed they were taking over all the floor space in our closet.  So as I looked one morning I thought to myself, if I can separate the male shoes from the female shoes I just might get my closet back (well at least my corner).  That is when we put in shoe shelves (actually the whole closet) so I could stop the multiplication (or at least slow it down). If the shoes or even clothes in your closet seem to be multiplying give us a call today here at Closet Factory Richmond so we can begin creating a custom closet solution for you to help slow down the multiplication!

Seasonal Closet Organization

September 29th, 2010

girl cleaning closetImagine you have to be to work in 20 minutes, your commute will take up 15 of those, and with the addition of cooler mornings you want to grab a sweater but you just can’t get to it in 5 minutes. Although you’ve re-organized and cleaned up your closet every piece of summer clothing you own is in the front and your cold weather clothes are in the back. Now that fall is officially upon us you may not need to have you summer wardrobe at the forefront of your closet.

If you happen to have a lot of clothes you may need to consider rotating the items in your closet on a seasonal basis. Removing your summer clothes from your closet and storing them in else where will clear room for your long sleeve shirts, sweaters and jackets. Rotating your closet on a seasonal system will make organizing and finding items easier with only one season’s clothes to worry about. Remember as you are packing up clothes for the off season to store them in an organized manner so you can put them back in the closet with ease.

Simple Desk Organization

September 22nd, 2010

modern office desk by Closet Factory

Desk designed by Closet Factory

You have a rack of over flowing file folders, a legal pad, a stapler and tape dispenser, a pencil holder, 3 sticky-note pads, a calendar, your cell phone and desk phone, your iPod, a bottle of water, hand sanitizer, and computer all on your desk. Not only is it a lot to call aloud, but it’s a lot to have on your desk. As the week progresses things are sure to get moved around and scattered about. If you are having a hard time finding things or focusing it may be time to organize your desk. To do so follow these simple steps to desk organization.

  • Take everything off. Decide which things are most important to your fulfilling your duties and find another storage place for everything else.
  • Keep a small notebook or pad by the phone to jot down conversation notes and voicemails so they are readily available. Also use this to create notes before a conversation as a guide.
  • Keep your planner or PDA open and in plain sight. This will make scheduling meetings and appointments easier and quicker.
  • Place all your office supplies in a drawer. Keep extra pens, paperclips, notepads and other supplies in one place off your desk.
  • Sort your files. Purge any files that are no longer relevant to make space for new items and things you use on a regular basis.
  • Use the last 10 minutes of your time in your office to clean your desk so things aren’t chaotic when you return. Place your next task in the middle of your desk for when you return.
